Avoid Chinese public holidays, especially the first week of October and the Spring Festival period. Summer is hot and crowded; winter can bring fog that delays sailings. For a business trip, build in one buffer day in Shanghai or Chongqing before boarding. If you are arriving from Hawaii, route through Shanghai or Beijing and give yourself a full day before the train.
