During my years organizing the Shanghai Overseas Property Exhibition, my international clients always asked for the best post-event getaway. Today, I tell them that a luxury Yangtze River cruise is the ultimate escape. When evaluating a ship for these buyers, I focus less on the show lounge and more on the indoor swimming pool and gym. For anyone who runs a business, those two areas determine whether the trip resets your body or breaks it. Century Cruises has done more than most to make those spaces worthy of an executive traveler.

I have inspected every Century vessel at least twice in the last decade. Here is my honest, working review of the indoor swimming pools and gym facilities on Century ships, written with the same checklists I use for high-net-worth clients.

The Executive Wellness Audit: Why the Pool and Gym Matter on a Yangtze Cruise

A river cruise is a floating hotel, and I treat the wellness deck as a barometer for the entire operation. A pool that is cloudy, a gym with broken treadmills, a changing room with no towels — those are red flags for the engine room, the kitchen, and the bridge.

On Century Paragon, the indoor pool and gym are consistently maintained. On Century Glory, the same standard applies. That consistency matters when you arrive after a business trip with a cramped lower back and a deadline looming. For an executive traveler, the pool is not a toy. It is the place where you clear your head between meetings, shore excursions, and dinner with clients.

The Indoor Pool: A Real Swimming Hole, Not a Decorative Tank

Locationand Layout on Century Paragon

Century Paragon’s indoor pool sits on the forward section of Deck 3, directly below the observation lounge and beside the spa. That location is deliberate. The pool is protected from the wind, but the ceiling opens in clear weather. I have swum laps in the middle of the Three Gorges at 8 a.m. with a glass roof sliding open, and it is as close to a private infinity pool as you will find on a river vessel.

The water is warmed to around 29°C. That is warm enough to make an early swim comfortable, but not so warm that you feel sluggish. For an executive who is used to a hotel lap pool, this is the right temperature.

LapSwimming and the Retractable Roof

For a river ship, the pool is a proper lap pool. I have measured about fifteen meters from the shallow-end stairs to the deep-end wall. That gives you twelve strokes per length with good form. Not Olympic, but enough for interval work. The retractable roof is the real differentiator.

On an indoor-only ship, chlorine feels trapped. On Century Paragon, the open roof turns the pool into a bright, covered terrace. For the executive traveler, this means you can swim every day of the cruise regardless of weather. The same holds true on Century Glory, which has a similar retractable system.

TheChanging Room Weakness

Here is the honest part. The changing rooms adjacent to the indoor pool are adequate, not luxurious. There are lockers with electronic keys, rainfall shower heads, and a small steam room. But the layout is compact. If you are accustomed to a hotel spa with separate wet and dry zones, you will find the Century changing room functional rather than pampering.

My advice: put on your swim trunks in your suite and walk down in an extra robe. This saves time and avoids the rush after the morning excursion.

Gym Facilities: The Business Traveler’s Command Center

Equipmenton Century Paragon and Century Glory

The gym on Century Paragon is tucked behind the pool on the same deck. It is glass-walled, so you can see the forward river view while you run. The equipment is not from the most exclusive European brand, but it is well maintained.

Expect four treadmills, two ellipticals, two stationary bikes, a rowing machine, and a rack of dumbbells from 2 to 20 kilograms. Century Glory adds a multi-station cable machine and a Smith machine, which is unusual on a river cruise. All of it is bolted down, which is necessary on a ship but can feel restrictive. Still, for a business traveler who needs a quick strength circuit, it works.

OpeningHours and the Time Zone Advantage

The gym officially opens at 6:30 a.m. and closes at 10:00 p.m. However, if you are on Shanghai time and wake up at 5:00, talk to the front desk the night before. The crew will unlock the gym early for VIP Executive Lounge guests. This is a small courtesy, but it makes a difference when you are trying to squeeze in a workout before the morning excursion call.

I have used this service twice, and the staff did not seem annoyed. They are used to executive guests who need to stay on schedule.

TheMissing Item: More Free Weights

The weak point is the lack of a squat rack and heavy free weights. You will not find a barbell beyond a 20-kilogram set on Century ships. For most executives, that is fine. But if you are a serious lifter, you will need to adjust your program to machine work and bodyweight.

My suggestion is to request a set of resistance bands from the spa. The front desk can usually provide them. That is better than trying to improvise with a towel and a deck chair.

VIP Executive Lounge and the Gym Connection

The VIP Executive Lounge on Century Paragon is on Deck 5, near the bow. It is my favorite workspace because it has large tables and reliable power plugs. I hold my client’s morning briefing there, then walk to the gym. Staff serve espresso and small pastries, and the concierge can reserve the indoor pool for a private hour between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.

That kind of service is what separates a standard cruise from an executive trip. For a client who is still closing deals while on the Yangtze, the VIP Executive Lounge is the operations center. The gym and pool are just an extension of that.

Getting There: Shanghai to Yichang Without the Blowback

TheBullet Train and Maoping Port

When I arrange a cruise from Shanghai, I avoid the domestic flights. A flight to Yichang can get canceled by military exercises or weather, and then the ship sails without you. Instead, I use the G70 from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Yichang East Railway Station. The train takes about six hours and is punctual.

From Yichang East, a pre-booked private car reaches Yichang Maoping Port in about 40 minutes. At the port, the Century crew sets up a VIP desk. Give them your passport, and your luggage arrives in your suite before you are finished with the welcome buffet. This is the standard I expect for my clients.

EmbarkationTiming

Make sure your train arrives no later than 2:00 p.m. The ship’s safety briefing is usually at 5:00, and the gangway closes at 6:00. If you arrive earlier, go straight to the indoor pool. The tourist groups from the airport are not on board yet, and you will get the pool to yourself. This is the best use of the first hour.

Wi-Fi, Remote Work, and the Gym Floor

I test Wi-Fi in every ship. On Century Paragon, the signal in the VIP Executive Lounge is strong enough for a video call without choppy audio. In the gym, it is weaker. Do not try to take a Zoom call from a treadmill. The satellite bandwidth prioritizes the lounge and the suite decks.

Instead, use the gym for offline tasks and the lounge for calls. If you need to be reachable during a workout, put your phone on airplane mode and rely on smartwatch notifications. The 15-meter pool is your off-the-grid window. That is often the most productive part of the trip.

The Post-Swim Routine and Premium Dining

After a swim, I use the spa steam room for ten minutes. Then I go to the main dining room’s designated executive table — table 11, the one next to the window. The chef can produce a high-protein breakfast: egg-white omelet, smoked salmon, and fresh fruit.

A private dinner in the Captain’s Club restaurant must be arranged before 10:00 a.m. That is a crowd-pleaser because the menu includes a solid beef fillet and a selection of Chilean wines. For an executive who has spent the day in suit and tie, this is a quiet way to end the evening without the buffet noise.

Century Legend and Century Sky: The Older Ships Still Hold Up

Century Paragon and Century Glory get the press, but the older Century Legend and Century Sky also have indoor pools. On Legend, the pool is a few meters shorter and the gym is not in the same location. The equipment is older. However, the water quality is still good.

If you have a client who will spend many hours working, choose Paragon or Glory. If the itinerary is more important than the gym, Legend is fine. But do not expect the same level of executive lounge support or the same retractable pool roof.

The Director’s VIP Tip

On the Chongqing-to-Yichang route, book the first morning at Yichang Maoping Port and board before 2:00 p.m. Then go immediately to the indoor pool on Deck 3. The water is reheated from overnight maintenance and the chlorine is corrected by 10:00 a.m., so you get a clean, uncrowded lane until about 1:30. The VIP Executive Lounge concierge can reserve this window for you during the embarkation process. Also ask for a starboard-side suite on Deck 5. It is one flight above the gym and two deck-door steps from the spa. That is the fastest and quietest access to the wellness deck without using the public elevator.
